Jumping from a Springboard into Water

When learning acrobatic gymnastics or martial arts flips, jumping into water is a great training method—especially for skills you’re not yet ready to try on a trampoline or with mats. It’s a safer way to get used to the motion and feeling of flips. Find detailed gymnastics instructions and training methods at Gymnastics Main.

Description

When jumping into water from a springboard, you can try anything: saltos hacia adelante, hacia atrás, con giros, etc. It doesn’t matter how advanced you are in gymnastics. It is recommended to jump from a 1-meter springboard, not from 3, 5, or 10 meters.

The most important precaution is not hitting the springboard after jumping. This can happen if you jump too vertically instead of jumping outward. Be aware of this risk. Practice jumping away from the springboard a few times before attempting any flips. Get familiar with the distance between you and the board.

Advice

  • Always jump away from the springboard, not straight up.
  • Always check the water for swimmers before jumping.
  • When practicing variations of back flips, stand with the balls of your feet on the edge of the springboard, so your heels hang off. Swing your arms, then jump back and up.
  • If you're practicing jumps that don’t involve pushing off with both legs simultaneously (e.g., front whips, cartwheels without hands), don’t use a springboard. In that case, it’s better to jump from a stable 1-meter platform into the water.
