Basically, there are two types of Qi Gong exercises. First, there are Internal Qi Gong exercises, which are primarily for health and meditation. Then, there are External Qi Gong exercises, where practitioners break bricks, bend metal, and perform other feats of physical strength.
What most people don’t know is that it’s not necessary to practice internal Qi Gong in order to perform external Qi Gong. For external Qi Gong, all you need are exercises to harden your shins, hands, etc., and the right technique. Of course, concentration is also required, because if you can’t focus and hit even slightly incorrectly, you could injure yourself.
Internal Qi Gong exercises are meditative practices. In many Chinese martial arts shows (e.g., Shaolin shows), meditative exercises are performed before the external Qi Gong acts. These internal exercises are mostly for show. They help clear the mind and improve concentration on what you’re about to do, but they don’t create any secret extra power. However, concentration is definitely important.
