Song Jiang offers a wide range of Chinese, Japanese, and Western martial arts. About 40 percent of the students practice wushu taolu (wushu forms), around 25 percent train sanda (Chinese kickboxing), and the rest do wrestling, boxing, movie stunts, taekwondo, judo, and more. The availability of some classes may change from time to time, so make sure to contact Li Chen early and don’t be shy about asking questions.
Foreigners usually train with private wushu instructors. If you want to train in a regular class with Chinese students, ask before you go. Also check out our wushu section if you want to prepare in advance.
Martial Arts: Courses at Song Jiang Wushu School
Wushu Taolu
Song Jiang focuses mainly on modern wushu and acrobatics, but they can also teach traditional styles. If you want to learn a traditional style, make sure Li Chen knows in advance, as the school may need to arrange a specific instructor.
Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing)
Sanda is one of the strongest disciplines at Song Jiang, probably among the best in China. They have a very good coach, and his students compete and win at many national and international competitions.
Movie Stunts
If you want to learn movie stunts, you should already have solid experience in wushu, gymnastics, or tricking. If the school is preparing for a big event, such as an Olympic opening ceremony, movie stunt classes might not be available, as the team often trains elsewhere for these projects. For availability, contact Mr. Li Chen early.
Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling)
There is usually only one class for Chinese wrestling, and it may not be available if there are not enough Chinese students. Ask Mr. Li Chen before going to Song Jiang.
Taekwondo, Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo
You can also take classes in taekwondo, boxing, judo, and similar styles. Most people probably don’t go to China specifically to learn these, but you can mix courses and, for example, attend an additional judo class once a week.
Gymnastics
Song Jiang Wushu School is a martial arts school and does not teach gymnastics as a separate discipline. However, back handsprings and flips with up to one full twist are part of wushu training. They also have bouncy floors that can be used for basic gymnastics training. If you want to learn basic tumbling skills, that’s no problem. If you want to learn pommel horse or high bar skills, Song Jiang can’t teach those.
What Else Can I Learn: Courses at Song Jiang Wushu School
You can also learn Chinese at Song Jiang Wushu School. You can either ask Mr. Li Chen for private lessons or sit in on regular general education classes. You mostly listen, and your classmates will help you learn.
