How often will I train wushu?

Students at Song Jiang Wushu School usually train about five hours per day, seven days a week. Depending on the time of year, training is split into two or three sessions per day, but the total daily training time is always around five hours. One school lesson equals about 45 to 50 minutes.

The first training session is in the morning before breakfast and starts sometime between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. This session usually consists of about one hour of running, stretching, and plyometric exercises. After that, you have breakfast. Chinese students then attend general education classes until around 10:00 a.m.

The next wushu training session runs from 10:00 to 11:50. After this second training, there is a lunch break, and students who attend general education classes go back to class again. The next training session starts around 4:00 p.m. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m., and in the evening Chinese students attend classes once more.

Spare Time

This routine continues seven days a week. The only real break is between Saturday night and Sunday morning. On Saturday night, Chinese students have one lesson less. Instead, they usually watch a movie outdoors. On Sunday morning, there is no morning training, so you can sleep about one hour longer.

There aren’t real weekends, but at the end of each month students get between four and seven days off so they can go home and visit their families. Almost 90 percent of the students use this break, but a small number stay at the school and continue training regularly.

When it rains or the weather is very bad, there is no outdoor training. Fortunately, it doesn’t rain very often. If you’re only coming to Song Jiang for a few weeks, make sure you can train in an indoor hall when the weather is bad.

Timetable Changes

During the hot months, the school sometimes tries to avoid training between 10:00 and 12:00. When that happens, you might train two hours before breakfast and three hours in the afternoon. The exact start and end times of lessons also change from time to time, so don’t be surprised if your entire routine changes overnight.
