Wushu Front Flip Back Crash

This is a classic Wushu Ditang technique (flying and falling), and it's also a popular move in fight choreography. In wushu, this technique is often combined with a wushu kip up. Technically, it’s a ¾ front flip—you land on your toes, then let your feet slip forward and absorb the fall with your forearms and hands. The shorter the time between your feet and forearm contact, the more intense and dramatic the move looks. Once you've mastered the timing, it becomes easy to perform—even on concrete.

Description: Wushu Front Flip Back Crash

  • Begin with a front flip. (See the Front Flip lesson for details.)
  • Open your arms slightly to slow the rotation and aim to land on your toes (not your heels).
  • Let your feet slide forward, then place your forearms and hands on the ground at the same time to absorb the fall.
  • Next, your upper back makes contact. (Make sure your arms are spread wide enough.) If your hands are too close to your hips, you risk injuring your shoulder blades when your back hits the ground.
  • Your head, butt, and lower back should never touch the ground.

  • Learn this technique using a trampoline with thick landing mats, or a springboard and a sandpit.
  • You can learn this move before or after mastering the front flip—it’s about the same level of technical difficulty.
