Jujitsu (Gentle Art) is an Asian martial art, most likely invented around 2000 BCE in India and later established in Japan. It emphasizes short-range combat: throws, joint locks, grappling, and similar techniques. Jujitsu became increasingly popular in Japan until Dr. Kano Jigoro began modernizing the art and attempted to make it more scientific. He invented Judo, which became widely popular for a long time.
Between the First and Second World Wars, the Japanese Jujitsu champion Esai Maeda brought Jujitsu to Brazil, from where this ancient martial art gained new prominence. That was the beginning of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
